ABOLISH GLUE TRAPS CAMPAIGN

Please Sign Petition

Rat Planet began a campaign in 2001 to outlaw glue traps and it's time we took another look at the nightmare contraptions. I recently noticed that they were being sold on eBay for a few pounds, to anyone who wanted one.

Glue traps are boards covered with a very strong adhesive. When caught, an animal will struggle for life. The harder he struggles, the more stuck he becomes. Death is slow and terrible, often dehydration and starvation. If the animal's face becomes adhered, he will suffocate. Rats and mice have been known to chew their own limbs off in an attempt to escape, usually unsuccessfully. After a few hours, the animal will be covered in its own urine and poo caused by the intense fear and distress.

The RSPCA told us categorically that they would never use these traps themselves, and that they should never be used. They are a terrible source of suffering and all of the large animal welfare groups agree.

Animal Aid and PETA  (People's Ethical Treatment for Animals) are also in total agreement and back the proposed ban.

The Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights is adamantly opposed to glue traps. They call them "inherently cruel" and say that their use cannot be justified.

WHY, when so many of the animal welfare organizations, and concerned individuals, all agree that these traps are totally inhumane and unnecessary, are they still available?

We need your help to stop this cruelty.

If you see glue traps on sale in any shop, including pet shops, talk to the owners and try to persuade them to stop selling them. I'm amazed that some pet shops have glue traps on sale - right next to the rat food! Always be polite and remain calm. Aggression or bad language never does a campaign any good.

If you come across an animal caught in a glue trap, slowly pour olive oil or other cooking oil on the animal and gently remove him. These animals will be incredibly frightened, so wear thick gloves and take care. He will be fighting for his life. Try not to stress the animal any further. Unfortunately, because rats and mice are not protected or native to this country, the larger animal welfare societies will put them to sleep. Could you care for the animal yourself, just until he's recovered?

Humane alternatives are available from places such as Acrorats (Bless you Jules!). Never call a pest control company or the environmental health dept. They will certainly destroy the animal.

Please help in any way you can.

Thank you!
